Do you trust third party messaging apps?

I don't really know whether I should buy any of the zillion messaging apps out there, mainly because I don't wan't to give out my un and pw to third party companies. I really don't have a clue how the authentication is done. Is my un and pw sent via, say Beejive's or IM+'s, servers or is the authentication handled in compliance with the desktop version of the programs authentication procedure?

Does anyone know which app is the most "trustworthy"; that is the one whose servers does NOT handle your credentials?

i only trust Apps from the original company.

Unless million of people are already using the App.

Bee jive is the only 3rd party one i trust. IM+ reminds me of ICQ
