My wife wanted to see a list of them broken down by catagorise like games, utilities, social and other things like that.

If I get you right, you really needed a list of apps you can read offline. You can use AppStore SDK to get information about all apps grouped by categories. I found this great software on appstoresdk dot com

Barnes and Noble has a couple magazines that go over popular apps wasn't bad reading while I was waiting for a ride home!!

I prefer to use appshopper dot com when looking for apps. I enjoy being able to track app prices and be notified when they go on sale. Plus I just think the iTunes interface is inferior to a web browser.
