So this may belong in the iOS 10 section but I am asking here since I have an iPhone 7.

It seems that when I am sent an e-message, I do not get notified of it until I turn the screen on. There is no sound or anything. Regular text seem to get notified as soon as received. Anyone have a clue as to why this may happen? Did not happen with my 6s Plus on IOS 9 and does not seem to happen to my sons 6s on iOS 10

Try going to Setting>Notifications and look for messaging see if it has an assigned tone or are there exceptions

Had a tone. Only exception I had was to not have it display on the lock screen.

Oops! That's entirely beside the track
OP doesn't get an audio notification only when receiving iMessages.

Is the vibrate switch on mute? Look at the left side of your phone make the little rocker switch doesn't show orange

I will say this is resolved. Appears to be user error in having one of the notification settings wrong. Thanks all for the replies

All that matters is that you got it sorted out.
