Contacts question?

When I go to send a new text. I start type in name and below it populates. I get names and numbers of contacts I had years ago but no longer in my contacts. What do I have turned on that it is doing this? TIA

At the end of those old contacts, there is an (i) symbol. Tap it and remove from recents.[/QUOTE]

Ps: recents doesn't literally refer to a specific time frame in this case.

Those with no "i" are still active contacts. You can't delete those without deleting the contact or the number/email address associated with the contact.

You might also check to see which accounts you have under Contacts in settings. I once inadvertently had contacts turned on for a very old email account. Once I realized this, I toggled that email account off, and my issue went away.
