Like many of you, I imagine, I've been testing out iOS 10.1 beta and the 'Portrait Mode' depth effect for the camera. Sometimes it gets goofy, but often times it gives me photos I can't believe came from a smartphone camera.

Here are some samples I've taken. Show me some of yours!

I just downloaded the beta last night to try this feature. Coming from a note 7 I really enjoyed their blur. Here are some quick pics I took after seeing my dog took my spot in bed this morning...

iPhone 5s and up will be able to take similar portrait mode with FabFocus when it's released in a few days.

I noticed around the edges of cups, bottles and solid objects the image tends to be blurred as well. I wonder if the software layering looks for "soft edges?"

It's a neat feature but does it ever need so much work.
It looks over processed. I get much better results using a regular photo and then applying filters in CC myself.
It really messes up with flowers. Anything with intricate edges. etc. For novice work where most will be looking at snapshots on a phone screen, etc. it will do. Kind of disappointed at the distance and light requirements as well. Samsung's camera app has had this feature for a while now and it works better. Comparing it to a DSLR with a F1.2 prime is hilarious.

That being said, we are asking a LOT for a phone. If you showed pictures in this thread to someone just five years ago and said they were taken with a smart phone they'd laugh at you or worse. But that's how tech works.

I'm guessing this is why it wasn't released with the phone, and why we are still waiting for iOS 10.1.

Let's hope so. It's a feature with lots of potential since there's more information with dual sensors.

It does have some confusion with hair, flowers, soft edges of objects, etc.
Look at this and how it blurs the background...
IMO, it works very well for being a software blur and not a physical/optical blur (like with a real SLR/DSLR and a nice prime lens)

Its only available on the beta iOS10 software as of now. There will be an update to this month that will add it to the OS and then you will have it.
