Why are text messages showing up on my phone and my wifes phone?

Both using iphone 6s. Single ITunes account. Configured for imessage not text message. When I send a text to wife, the text also shows up on my phone as a message received. Same when wife sends me a text.

You need to use separate Apple IDs for iMessage. You can still share the same Apple ID for iTunes if you wish. Or you can set up Family Sharing.

My wife and I share the same iTunes ID. But have separate iCloud, iMessage and Facetime ID's.

You're using the same iCloud address, which is just like sharing an email address. Set up one for each of you, and if it's just the two of you, just keep sharing the iTunes.
