Images that are over two years old are showing as blanks on iphone 6s plus

Recently had a new iphone 6s plus and set it up as I have done previously when upgrading. I've only just realised though that I'm missing all images that were taken over two years ago. It is showing that it recognises where and when the picture was taken but not the image. If I select an image and press edit it comes up with a message that says cannot load photo, there was an error loading this photo. Have phoned apple but tbh they were useless. Am rather panicked as its looking as though I've lost 3 years worth of images

Are the photos synced to iCloud/iCloud Photo Library? If so, login to iCloud via a computer to verify that the pics are present. If so, sign out of iCloud on your iPhone 6S Plus, reboot it and then sign back in. The pics should sync back to it.

I have the same issue. Tried your suggestion and the images are still showing as blank.
