Just click home button. If you want to force close them, double click home button until you see card deck of all your open apps. Scroll through and swipe up on the ones you want to close.

You don't need to quit the apps. Just go back to the home screen by pushing the round home button once.
Only "quit" an app that is causing issues and/or has frozen. iOS will handle everything else for you.

Closing apps does not help battery life. That's only a myth.

I have over 20 apps open constantly. Battery life is pretty great
