Husband lost all contacts. Desperate!! How can he get them back?

Husband lost all contacts. Desperate!!

My son updated his new iPhone 6 and somehow my husband has lost all his contacts on his iPhone 4. We are not techno savvy and can't think what he has done or how to get my husbands really important business contacts back. Help!!!!!!!!!!!

How did a newer phone in 6 have to do with losing anything on your husbands 4? The only thing that comes to mind if they re both using the same Apple ID so if that is the case I would have them both sign in to iCloud to get bsck the contacts and then have your husband change the Apple ID of one of his own. Again I am assuming this was what happened and if NO please give us more info. Thank you.

They do need separate iCloud, iMessage and Facetime ID's. Then go to Settings, iCloud > Toggle on contacts.
If Gmail contacts, go to Mail,Contacts and Calendar > Gmail account > Toggle on contacts.
