Calendar alerts; How can I silence them?

IPhone6 How can I silence alerts (calendar for instance)? With my 5 I could press a side button to silence them but now they play to the end even when Im on a call!

Play to the end? Are you using a ringtone for a calendar alert? I mean, my Calendar alerts last maybe a second so I've never had to silence them. Does the mute switch on the side of the device not silence the alert?

Calendar has 4 separate alerts. Choose an "Alert Tone" for each. Don't use a "Ringtone".
