I had the same problem. Moved from iPhone 4 on VZ to iPhone 6 on T-Mobile. I restored my apps, contacts, texts, etc. from my iCloud back-up, which seemed to work. All my contacts were shown in my Contacts list, but the names were not displaying in both existing and new text messages.

Other forums suggested turning phone off, then back on. Nothing.
Another suggested that turning off Dial Assist {Settings/Phone} followed by turning off/on the phone would help. Didn't do anything.

What worked for me was associating a text message to an existing contact.
    - I opened the text message and clicked on "Details" in the upper right corner.
    - Then I clicked on the "info" icon (lower case i with circle around it)
    - Click on "Add to Existing Contact"
    - Choose the contact name to associate this cell number to

When I did this, it associated not only this one number to a existing contact, but associated ALL my messages from existing contacts, kinda like magic. Maybe it was this, or maybe it was a combination of all steps but it worked for me.

Try a fresh reset and restore as a new iPhone.

This advice was a life saver. I was trying to fix each contact one at a time by sending a new message to them. I tried this method (adding a number to an existing contact) and it took care of them all in one second. Thanks for posting!

PS - just to be clear, no need to reset or restore the phone when using this method.
