Apple Pay Question

When putting the phone near the terminal, does the phone have to be unlocked first or does it automatically open? My daughter told me that she had to last night .. Once unlocked,she had to open the app.. I thought it automatically opened when it gets near the terminal?

When I have used it I just held my finger on the touch id (without pressing it) and the phone automatically responded. I did not need to open the phone or the app.

Can you recall if your phone was locked or not?

I have used Apple Pay a few times and all I ever have to do is hold it up to the terminal with my finger on Touch ID and it comes to life. My phone has always been locked

Under "Settings" - "Notifications" - "Passbook" there is an option "Show on Lock Screen". I don't know if this would help since as stated above I have only used Apple Pay after unlocking my iPhone and bringing up Passbook.
