Apple Pay & Cases?

Random question but as I'm in the UK I don't have Apple Pay as yet and just wondered if cases have any impact on the NFC signal and the terminal recognising the device?

I know it probably works fine but does anyone know if technically it does affect it? In the videos I saw of it being used after the Apple Keynote there were a couple of guys who seemed to have to try a few times each time holding the iPhone 6 closer to the reader so wondered if a case caused any issues?

I have a case in my phone and used Apple Pay for the first time today and it worked very well.
