I noticed capacity is only set at 113gb so that means the rest is reserved for the OS? How come it's that big

It's not. It's just the difference in reporting storage size in decimal vs binary. All hard drives and SSDs have that discrepancy whether it's in a phone, tablet or computer. And the bigger the drive the larger the discrepancy is. For instance a 1 TB drive will only have around 960GB space after it is formatted.
You should just return the phone already.
iOS takes about 6GB. 128GB formatted is probably about 120GB usable space.
There was a formula used that someone said would be about these figures. They must have been off a bit.
The higher the capacity of the device the more "missing" space there will be. If the 16 GB has 4 missing and the 64 has 8, the 128 will have about 11.3 missing. What does the 128 gb come with? 120?

I'm suing Apple. I expect 128 gigs of storage AFTER the OS is installed.

So it does appear the higher the capacity the more space the OS takes up. If they ever go with a 256 gb iPhone, the OS plus the stock apps may take over 30 gb of space.I don't have a 128GB iPhone my 128GB iPad has 113GB. I believe my old 160GB iPod Classic has 143GB or 138GB or something similar.

You're saying my 16 gb iP 5 actually does have 16 gb available for me to use? Not 12.4 gb? That doesn't sound right. If the space is there, then why is it not reflected in the "available" amount? Seems they would want that to show. Then again, this may just be over my head. The space is still there. The Difference in space comes in that space is advertised as being 1 MB = 1000000 bytes so that would mean the advertised space is actually there and it truly is when using this method to calculate the space. This would mean a 32GB phone has 32GB and 64, really has 64. OSX uses this method so it appears that you are getting the advertised space on any HD.
iOS actually calculates space as 1 MB = 1024000 bytes (= 1000?1024) which is why there appears to be less space then advertised.
Windows computers and all phones use this method so it appears that there is less space then advertised.
It's all still there it's just that the HD manufacturers advertise space different then most operating systems calculate it so there is the difference.

I see your difference in data amounts. But I can't put it to use. With a 16 gb phone. How much space is actually "available" for the user to use? Don't use bytes, there's too many of those. Show this in mb and gb. You seem to be saying one actually gets 16 gb available for use. That would mean the actual total capacity is 19.6 gb. I think you lost me using bytes. The OS with the apps has to take up space. If it's not in the advertised 16, then where is it?Read what I posted above again. The reason is because the space is advertised as 1 MB = 1000000 bytes
The OS calculates space as 1 MB = 1048576 bytes so it appears there is less space.
Got it?
