iOS takes around 14gb of space on the 128gb model ?

I noticed capacity is only set at 113gb so that means the rest is reserved for the OS? How come it's that big

It's not. It's just the difference in reporting storage size in decimal vs binary. All hard drives and SSDs have that discrepancy whether it's in a phone, tablet or computer. And the bigger the drive the larger the discrepancy is. For instance a 1 TB drive will only have around 960GB space after it is formatted.

Oh. I knew that ( of the discrepancy ) but didn't figure it would be that big on a 128GB iphone

I didn't pay that much attention when I got my 128 6+, I guess that was part of the reason for 128 was that I really wouldn't have to think about space ever. I have a little over 63GB free right now with everything on the phone.

There was a formula used that someone said would be about these figures. They must have been off a bit.
The higher the capacity of the device the more "missing" space there will be. If the 16 GB has 4 missing and the 64 has 8, the 128 will have about 11.3 missing. What does the 128 gb come with? 120?

I don't have a 128GB iPhone my 128GB iPad has 113GB. I believe my old 160GB iPod Classic has 143GB or 138GB or something similar.

Don't forget to sue the hard drive manufacturer that made the drive in your computer as well. It is the same. OSX kind of "lies" and reports the space distant then what ios does so it appears to be all there.
Windows will report a 128gb ssd as about 113gb as well. It is normal.

I think OEM's should be forced to sell products saying its actual capacity open to the consumer vs the capacity it technically has. Noticed a 16Gb iPhone 6 has around 8-9gb of space available to the consumer which isn't a lot at all. The Samsung Galaxy S4 had around 8GB of space available to consumer.

That explains where the "missing" space has gone. It's still there but the OS reports the space so that it appears space is missing.

Just so we're clear, Android phones report the space the same way so that it appears space is missing,

Apple even put a message on the bottom of every iPhone box about formatted capacity.

I don't have a 128GB iPhone my 128GB iPad has 113GB. I believe my old 160GB iPod Classic has 143GB or 138GB or something similar.

So it does appear the higher the capacity the more space the OS takes up. If they ever go with a 256 gb iPhone, the OS plus the stock apps may take over 30 gb of space.

The space is still there. The Difference in space comes in that space is advertised as being 1 MB = 1000000 bytes so that would mean the advertised space is actually there and it truly is when using this method to calculate the space. This would mean a 32GB phone has 32GB and 64, really has 64. OSX uses this method so it appears that you are getting the advertised space on any HD.

Read what I posted above again. The reason is because the space is advertised as 1 MB = 1000000 bytes

I see your difference in data amounts. But I can't put it to use. With a 16 gb phone. How much space is actually "available" for the user to use? Don't use bytes, there's too many of those. Show this in mb and gb. You seem to be saying one actually gets 16 gb available for use. That would mean the actual total capacity is 19.6 gb. I think you lost me using bytes. The OS with the apps has to take up space. If it's not in the advertised 16, then where is it?

Seriously, why is it so difficult for manufactures to achieve this ? When I buy a device that has 128GB, 64GB, and 16GB of storage I really expect (even though I know better) to have that much space available to me ...
