Will the iphone 6+ will take 16x9 pictures or will it be limited to 4x3?

Great question, but one I do not know. People will start receiving their device tomorrow (Friday) so hopefully, a member will respond with a definitive answer to your question. Take care...:)

Excellent question. I've always despised the 4:3 ratio concerning pictures taken with iOS. I sure hope that things will be different with the 6+ since it has a true 1080p display. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

I won't know for sure until hopefully sometime tomorrow, but I'd guess it's still 4x3. The 5 and 5s had the 16:9 screen ratio but still took pics in 4x3, so I'm guessing that the 6 and 6plus will continue in that vein.

If I am not mistaken, it is determined by the sensor and not the screen size. The 6+ is supposed to have better sensor than the 5. But will see.

You are correct. One does not have anything to do with the other. You might be able to use a 3rd party app to capture pics in 16:9, but they will be smaller than 8MP (essentially, take the 4x3 picture, crop the top and bottom).

So what's the status people? Has anyone received their 6+ as of yet? My delivery date is Oct 20th-27th so I have yet to test it.

The only way I found so far without cropping or using another app is to start shooting a video and then use the WHITE button to take stills in 16:9. You then delete the video and you keep your stills in 16:9 HD.

True, but you lose megapixels that way, the resolution is lower

You take a normal picture (will be 4:3 ratio) and then edit it afterwards to 16:9 using the crop tool in the Photos app (there is a preset that looks like a series of cascading rectangles in the lower right after you select the crop tool). There are also apps out there that can take 16:9 ratio pictures, but they essentially just take your standard image and "pre-crop" them when saving.

Better... use video option and a round white button appears on right-down corner, and you will can take 16:9 pictures on iPhone 6 Plus.

Putting aside the fact that this is a long dead thread, this is not an optimal solution because the picture taken is not the same quality as using the still camera mode. Simply cropping a normal picture to 16:9 gives you the same outcome but also retains the quality of a standard picture.

Here's a blog post on iMore itself explaining more about the details of doing such...

Snapped a pic of my living room and the 16:9 format looks amazing guys! I never knew that 16:9 crop option even existed! Thanks again!
