I disagree. "We" do not "need" a case. "Some" people should invest in a case to stave off damage, but many of us do not. I've had my iPhone 5 for about 15 months or so, and never had it encased, and it doesn't look like the one depicted in the initial post.

I use a case do to work, but know plenty of people that don't use cases and their phones are fine.

Those who do not use a protective case are lucky if they have no damage such as this. One can be the most careful and still drop the phone. Going caseless is a gamble. Some win and some lose. I always have my iPhone 5 in an Otterbox Defender. Out of the case, it looks brand new. I won't gamble with my iPhone. Going "naked" is not that important to me.
