I'm with Verizon. I thought I had to plug into iTunes in order to activate?? I'd be psyched if I could do it at work tomorrow.

I switched over from AT&T to Verizon last year. When I received the iphone 5, I just turned it on and it started working in a few minutes. Plus, my number ported automatically and my AT&T phone stopped working. It was so easy it was almost confusing. I thought I probably had to do something else!

My 5s is currently on its way from Alaska so we will see if it is the same tomorrow.

Is it worth it to buy AppleCare+ (or non plus version) for the iPhone 5s considering that I will have a case on it? Also, is it possible to buy the AppleCare+ after getting the device?

Cool. Maybe I'll be in luck then.

AppleCare + can be bought anytime within 30 days of purchase. I almost always get it just because there is less hassle. This year though I'm thinking about skipping because I know in only going to have it until the next release. I always have an Otterbox too so it's not like I'm going to majorly damage the phone.

This is an incredibly subjective issue.

Your iPhone comes with the basic AppleCare coverage - a 1 year warranty against manufacturing defects. The warranty includes 90 days of phone support (call Apple for assistance with issues/questions).

The AppleCare+ (PLUS) coverage extends the coverage (including the telephone support) for a full 2 years, and also covers accidental damage (breakage, water damage, etc) for $99. The catch is that typically, an "in warranty" replacement due to physical damage (breakage, water damage, etc) for $269. The AppleCare+ will allow you to replace your device TWICE in the coverage period for $79 per incident.

Neither plan covers loss/theft of your device.

So the question becomes one of "how clumsy are you?" If you tend to be accident prone and drop your phone a lot, it may be a good investment for you. It means that for $260 ($99 + $79 + $79), you can replace your phone twice for about the standard charge of replacing your phone once. If you buy it and never use it, then you have wasted the $99 price of the coverage...

Bottom line: Some buy it, some don’t. How accident prone are you?

I have carrier insurance AND AppleCare+ and I am glad I pay/paid for both. AppleCare+ doesn't cover loss/theft, and I have experienced a theft. But dealing with carrier insurance in the case of malfunction is a total pain in the a-- so it's just easier to get AppleCare+ for that.

My phone is on truck for delivery! WOOT!

You have 30 days to get AppleCare+ but if not purchased with the phone, Apple may require an inspection of the phone to verify that it is not already damaged. I don't know how often they actually do this though.

They do have a process for activating a diagnostic report remotely, as well.

True but that doesn't check for songs and scratches.

Understood. It may well have to do with how "old" the device is. I purchased AC+ on my iPhone 5 thee days after I bought the phone - it wasn’t offered at POS, and I got an email from Apple... when I contacted Apple to purchase coverage, they made me run the diagnostic and called it good.

That's precisely my point. You all know darn well we are going to run out and get iphone 6, so Apple Care isn't worth it IMO. I'm sure there are other benefits as well but Apple has some reasonable replacement prices at the Apple Store, even if it is your fault (ie, you drop it in the toilet).
