Why isn't my new iPhone 5c recieving emails?

my new iphone 5c is not recieving emails

I have a new phone and email account is set up but I'm not getting any email through and the following message appears ... the connection to the server failed

delete the account and re add see if that works

When you set it up did you get the confirmation ticks (blue)? I'm sure you would have otherwise I would delete and re add the account!
