Just sitting here... look at my new iPhone 5 and notice that it is still trying to update an app. So I check the bars for the wireless, and it says "4G," which is weird, since I'm at home. I go to settings/wi-fi... my network isn't there... then it is.... then it isn't. It connects, then disappears. I restart, renew license, put in SSID and password, am told "Can't find network." And when it blinks into existence I still get a weak signal from wireless network - the same one I get a great signal from with every other wireless device in my home. But on the iPhone 5 2 bars... 1 bar... blank... than back, then blank. Hours of this. Plugged the phone in, erased the lagging apps. I am now restoring and re-installing the ios. We'll see if that works.

If your iPhone 5 is already configured to your home Wi-Fi, you shouldn't have to "renew license, put in SSID and password". Simply put, I would do what you have already decided to do - restore the device "as new" via iTunes.
