My cousin has an iPhone 5 from AT&T. She will be staying in another country for a couple of weeks. We were wondering if we could unlock the device to use it with other carriers. She contacted AT&T, and they said they will be able to unlock it after 2014(!)

There's a thread in the jailbreak section from a company called Unlock Streak. They are giving away an unlock a day. I won one for my iPhone 4S and then when I bought my iPhone 5 I purchased an unlock through them. Well worth the money. But try to win one first.

Or you can just purchase an unlock on eBay. I paid $2.75 and the phone was unlocked the same day. I can let you known which eBay seller it was if you're interested.

There's usually places that unlock phones for you that you can google around your area or check out Craigslist.
