iPhone 5 LTE on Lock?

I have had the iPhone 5 for three days now but I am wondering what the deal is when I lock my phone. I am almost always on wifi and when I lock my phone and go to unlock it how's LTE. When I unlock it though it switches to wifi. Is this a problem or a common occurrence that I am unaware of?

It's a common occurrence. If the phone is in sleep mode for a few minutes, it will be off wifi and return back when you unlock it.

Now if you're doing something that requires wifi while it's locked, it won't do that. For example, if you were downloading a podcast
and decided to put your phone in sleep mode during the download.

More than a 'common occurrence'... "it's not a bug... it's a feature"... and put a 3rd way.... working as designed.

When the screen is locked, wifi "sleeps" and wakes when needed.
