Apple has to name things keeping the average consumer in mind, not just those that are really into it. The average consumer has no clue what generation of hardware it is. If they named it the six most folks are going to be wondering what happened to the 5. They've identified their naming progression with a new number every year and an S in between. Eventually they will move to something else as I don't see their being an iPhone 12 but until that happens this is what we have and I'm fine with it. It's a darn name, I could really care less what they called no less have it actually bother me.

I don't understand why people are so surprised it's called iPhone 5. There was an iPhone 4s it is totally silly no matter the generation to think they would call it iPhone 6. Apple doesn't care about anyone that would actually know the generations. They care about the 50 year old walking into a store finally fed up with their feature phone.

iPhone 5 was the right move, cause there had been lots of hype for an iPhone 5 for a year and a half and all the free media advertisement put iPhone 5 in people's heads where Apple would really didnt have to do much to get the name out there and just take pre-orders

I think they used some common marketing psychology. Everyone's called it the iPhone 5 and that's what people were expecting. Apple builds on that hype and takes advantage of the sales it brings.

Think they should've went with iPhone 6 too, especially since during the iPhone 4 presentation Steve Jobs said that they were calling it the iPhone 4 because its was the fourth generation iPhone this is an about face of that simple conclusion. I think it's just one of those little things that cause certain people anxiety about the direction of Apple under Tim Cooks leadership. This is by no means a tragedy of any sort it just shows a shift away from what 'Apple' has said before. Either way whether they're calling it 5, 6, 7 or 4 again it'll sell millions
