LG has such a phone at 5" that is considered an oversized phone.
How about 4"? With the same ipad 2 resolution, it'd have 320ppi keeping the retina requirement. At a 4:3 aspect ratio, it'd be significantly wider than the iphone 4S but perhaps not too big.
And what if they took iOS that is used on the ipad and tweaked it for iphone? Apple has only said smaller tablets than the ipad weren't great for a tablet experience. They didn't say anything about a smartphone experience.
