4S camera app crashes 90% of the time when taking photos in HDR

Hey guys, I was wondering if I could get help with an issue my dad is having. His 4S's camera app crashes 90% of the time when taking photos in HDR. It does the shutter normally as if it were taking a shot but then it goes black and force closes. Happens about 50% of the time without HDR on and never happens with the front-facing camera. Is anyone else having this issue or is his phone defective?

I never had any problems with the camera on the iPhone 4S. Does he have the time to restore it as a new device and see if that helps?

How would I backup all his contacts and pics? I haven't used iCloud before

iCloud gives you 5GB free back up and is simple to use go to

Settings>iCloud>Storage&Backup

Toggle on what you want to back up turn back up on and then hit back up now

My camera crashed occasionally on my 4s when I had it after the 7 update. Not only crashing but also caused the phone to reboot as well. It was weird.

I've never had the problem, and I've been running iOS 7 on my 4S since the release.
