No signal

Hello, I have tried looking on the internet for the answer but to no avail.

But bascially I bought an iphone 4s off ebay (orange locked). I cut my old sim (on orange) to fit in the microsim slot and didnt cut any of the gold bit.
Phone turns on fine and I imported all my contacts from my sim. But in the top left it shows the EE or Orange/tmobile and then just 5 little dashes where the signal should be. I can't phone or text or seemingly get any signal.

So my question, is this likely to be a problem with the sim, or something wrong with the phone? I've never owned an iphone before so have no idea. And also paranoid that I've been sold a dud.

I would try another SIM.

Try all options, then if it still will no work, have apple look at it and verify it is a working phone.

Does it say call failed when trying to phone anyone and beep three times? If so the phone could be blocked.
Wouldn't trust ebay when buying second hand iPhones unless its a trusted source.
