iMessage issues

I sent a message to my wife and it started as an iMessage and ended up being sent as a text. Is anyone else getting this? I ignored it the first time I saw it but now I'm at the point why should I even have it on?

It happens on occasion especially if Apple is having server-related problems. Anyway, just to be clear, does your wife indeed have iMessage enabled on her device? Is her phone on?
