Sending messages when offline - can it be done?

Hi
have just moved from BB to iPhone
On BBM (and therefore whatsapp) you could send a message when offline (eg: underground) and the message would go as soon as you got a signal
Whatsapp on iphone doesnt seem to work like that (no signal = no send button) are there any apps that would allow me to do this?

Third party apps cannot run in the background, which is why what's app cannot do the task you want. It may be able to for a short period, as some apps can request an additional minute or 2 to complete a task but after that they are forced to suspended state.

The stock messages app can do it; being an OEM app it runs in the background. But sometimes it will just say failed and you have to resend it.
