Never noticed my 4 doing this but have noticed on my 4S that if I set a sound as a text tone it sounds ok, if I set the the exact same sound as a ringtone it sounds really 'tinny'.
Anyone else noticed this or can have a go see if they can get the same result?
Can't see why the same speaker and tone combo should sound so different. Set the sound to any of the other configurable sound options (Voicemail, email etc) and it sounds 'full' set it as a ringtone and it sounds like it's coming through two tins with a bit of string between them!
Any ideas / thoughts?
