How to stop email from downloading when the app is first started

Hi, Just received my 4S and love it. There is one thing I want to do but don't know if it's possible. I want to prevent the iPhone from automatically downloading mail from my pop3 account. I'm not talking about stopping the fetching of mail once the app is running, but stopping the downloading of mail when the app is first started. Is this possible and if so how do I do this?

Why wouldn't you want it to get your email, when you open the app?
