Really excited. I bought it this morning thinking that was going to be signing up with ATT today. I took it home and decided, "why the hell not?" before heading out to the store. I popped my T-Mobile SIM in and iTunes said it was unlocked. I am super happy about that.

For those waiting until November it seems you can get it now!

That's because you can use it but will still only be edge speeds.

EDGE doesnt bother me one bit. I have Wifi just about everywhere and even when I am not on Wifi, I still get my push notifications, etc. Siri still works great on E and even better on WiFi. I am just happy I didnt have to wait until November.

Full price. I exchanged my 3 week old factory unlocked iPhone 4 for the 4S. I dont think it matters though. When I bought it the Apple rep escorted me over to the ATT reps who where setting up people on accounts. I told them I was uninterested at the time and left.

hate to tell you this but this probably isnt all phones.. you probably just got lucky with it.. at&t having locked phones isnt new they have had it with every phone they didnt change this

You're right, it may not be all phones but there are reports of many others who are getting the same results. HOWEVER, a part of me thinks that ATT did this intentionally. Either way I am glad I dont have to wait. Siri is very impressive I didnt think I would use it but I have been on it all day. Used it to help a guest today who needed a number quick as he was freaking out due to leaving a laptop behind at a hotel. Asked Siri for the number and there it was. Awesome.

Apple is now selling unlocked 4's in the US in a few of their stores at the full retail price. You were Lucky enough to get it at one of the stores that has them.

This had an ATT SIM in it with a sticker on the shrink wrap indicating it was for ATT. When I bought my factory unlocked iPhone 4 it came with no SIM.

The GSM iPhone 4S's do come with a AT&T SIM card preinstalled even though it is unlocked. That is the way Apple is selling them. Apple already selling unlocked, contract-free iPhone 4S in the United States | 9to5Mac | Apple Intelligence

I'm sending my Sprint one back and buying the AT&T one out right so I can use T-Mobile. I'll rather keep my contract with them and put the $200 towards the new iPhone 4S. It'll be 16GB instead of my 32 but oh well. I just hope down the line the AT&T model doesn't become locked with an update. LOL Oh man... what do you all think? Should I just wait until November (put date here) for the "unlocked" model?

I asked this question when I got home and was told that once you get the iPhone unlocked message via iTunes, that the phone is marked in an iPhone database during activation as UNLOCKED and each time you upgrade it reached the servers indicating it is an unlocked device. We are good to go.

Cool! Good news. Now I'm wondering if you put the sim in right away does it activate? Or is it mandatory to connect it to iTunes?

That I dont know. I put my SIM before powering it on for the first time. Then I followed the on screen instructions. It gave me an option to activate wirelessly or through iTunes. I chose the iTunes route and then I was met with the unlocked message.

Good luck. Remember though, I am sure you know, but you will only be using EDGE speeds. This seems to irk a lot of people but I am completely fine with it.

how to know if it is unlocked

hi guys, I really need your expertise here, I know that the easiest way to check this is by inserting another SIM card (like a t-mobile) but I am wondering if there is any other way :-S ...PLEASE HELP!! I need to make sure that the 4S is unlocked before I keep it...otherwise I need to return it to AT&T to get my money back (most of it)...btw I paid the full price of it and I have no contract with them, so please let me know if there is any other way to check this, besides inserting another SIM card

I believe that will be the only possible way to check because it isn't the "official" factory unlocked iPhone from Apple, you know?

So you returned your factory unlocked 4 and bought a 4s full retail and apple gave u a unlocked 4s vs a AT&T locked model ? Too bad they didn't give you this by buying the 4s on AT&T contract for 199 that would be amazing lol

My 4S is unlocked, gave me that congratulations you're unlocked screen. My mms still isn't working even though I have everything set up.
