In SF it sounds like Verizon & AT&T stores have plenty of stock. I'd call ahead.

AT&T in upstate NY have plenty. This was a lot like the Verizon release. Huge pre order, and in store release wasn't too bad.

I was in line behind only 2 other folks early this morning in Eastern Washington. By the time the store opened there were probably about 30 people. A bit later when I was leaving with my new phone another 30 or so folks had shown up. That particular Verizon store said they had received 110 iPhones.

My daughter just reported that everyplace within 80 miles of her is sold out of the AT&T version in all options. Just taking orders now for delivery in ten days to two weeks.

I guess it depends on where you are and how many they stocked.

I just saw that on the news...people were camping out since last night. Oak Brook had a steady stream of people throughout the day but they had plenty of phones.

I pre-ordered on 10/8 (cause that was my updgrade date), and i was due to get my shipment on the 21st. I just happened to be in the Vzw store today and one of the reps whom I had done alot of business with, and even showed her a few things, was there and cancelled my pre order and got me set up with a 32 GB 4S on the spot.

And, btw... overall I'm very happy with it.

That's the beauty of pre-ordering. It keeps the foot traffic in stores, down to a minimum. Your experience would have been much different if not for the pre-ordering system.

As for camping out at Apple stores, I would venture to say it's more about the experience.

Apple store in San Mateo CA still had some this evening. The AT&T store was out of 16GB but still had 32 & 64, and a line outside.
