Why is my iPhone 4 picture messages saying ? they were there before

I received pictures in my messages on my iPhone 4, Oct. 13 and now they do not show up. I just see a ? IMG_9683.jpg

Welcome to iMore! How long do you have "keep messages" set for under Settings > Messages? If you only have it set for 30 days that might explain your issue.

If you're still experiencing issues I recommend contacting Apple Support at www.apple.som/support or taking your phone into an Apple Store. Either way, it sounds like the photos don't exist anymore.
