Why does my iPhone 4 screen lock when I didn't lock it?

Why does my iPhone 4 screen lock when I didn't,t lock it? I

I make a call and when I disconnect the call the screen is locked next time I try to use it.

it automatically locks after a set amount of time- To change these go into settings General then auto lock.
