Ok guys I've just finished a repair to my standby button and it all went smooth- however, during the process when I removed the battery I noticed the small clip that goes under the battery was missing. I was wondering what the clip does and is it important.
I've put up a picture of what it looks like.

The Luther day I too was replacing the battery of my iPhone and found that clip near the connector. I actually remove it from the iPhone since I lost the screw which was keeping it tight in position and haver noticed any thing wrong with my phone, I too wonder what it is there for.

Just found out folks after painfully searching online.
It appears the clip forms a earth point between the cellular antenna and the back plate of the phone. If you look at the rear side of your back plate you will notice its metallic. The clip forms an extension to the cellular antenna thus using the backplate to amplify the signal. It makes sense as I've been having dreadful issues with calls cutting out constantly and only two bars of reception, if I'm lucky.
I've ordered a new one on amazon for a couple of pounds.
