IPhone 4 in Okinawa

My wife and I moved to Okinawa recently and had brought 2 unlocked IPhone 4s with us from the United States. I ended up buying a data plan from softbank that included 2 Japanese iPhone 4 and was told that I would not be able to use one of their sim cards in my American phones.

Recently my wife dropped her Japanese iPhone and the back part shattered. I thought I would give switching the Softbank sim card into the unlocked American iphone and it fit. It also seems to work as it did before except the the signal is not as strong.

I am wondering why the phone signal strength is weaker and if there are any potential problems with doing this. It seems that since I originally bought unlocked phones to take to Japan and I am actively paying for a softbank data plan everything should work out fine.

Thanks

I suspect it's the same problem there's always been using an unlocked iPhone in the US with T-Mobile - different bandwidth.
