You need to have the IMEI number of your device, and to find a tool on Internet that can tell you what carrier it is locked to with that info. Usually you have to pay for the complete info about your device, but if you're lucky you might find a tool somewhere that does it for free, or that gives the carrier info in its trial version.
If, as I gather you are, you're stuck at the activation screen, and if you don't have the original box of the iPhone, you'll need to hook your device to a CPU and check out the USB buses to get the IMEI. Google it all for the tools and know-how. - 07-20-2012, 11:13 PM #4

You might not need to pay, as I was saying...
Google a query like "Find carrier with IMEI"...
But why would you need that if you're already hacktivated and can access the screen? All you have to do now is install UltraSn0w 1.2.7 on Cydia... and put in whatever SIM you want... - 07-22-2012, 01:02 AM #7

Well... if you're sure what country it's from you can call each main carrier to know if it's their phone. A task made easier by the fact that, usually, the iPhone is restricted to only the most prominent carriers. So depending on which iPhone it is, you can easily know what carriers to call first.

The above method use to work but Apple has now stopped allowing these requests since mid August 2012. There is an alternative method, just not as simple.
Have a look at the article below.

How to find out my network carrier?
In no way, shape or form was I trying to be funny. Your initial post read:
Nowhere in that statement did you mention you wanted to unlock your device. You stated that you wanted to know your network carrier and my reply showed you where to look to get it. - 12-30-2012, 02:25 PM #23

Re: How to find out my network carrier?
I'm thinkin' young Juhil has a phone that he got second hand that came with no sim and no info from the seller as to what carrier it goes on. Without a sim belonging to the carrier to which it's locked, you can't tell from the phone itself.
There are several online services that will tell you what carrier your phone is locked to by providing your IMEI.

My main priority is to find out the network provider it came from.
