how do i know if an iphone is unlocked and how can i unlock an iphone for free, i need to know these things asap, i plan to buy an iphone 4 and use it with simple mobile... please help!

The quickest way is to try different SIM cards in it. If they work it's unlocked. If it's jailbroken you can check for the SAM package.
