Maybe I missed the point, but shouldn't I be in the camera app and then focus on a group of people that I want to take a photo of and little blocks are supposed to appear around their faces, hence "face detection"? Isn't this supposed to work like "smile detection" does on my normal camera?

+1 with dictoresno. I have a 4s with 5.1 and everyone but one.

Yeah, face detection only works on iphone4s and the new iPad on ios5.1 with default camera
