Super annoying issue

I have had my Verizon iPhone 4 for 3 months now and have updated to the iOS 5. Now everytime I get a text while on a call the txt tone plays. So I have a couple of questions.

1.) How do I shut it up while on a call so I can finish my conversation?

2.) How do I get it to stop all together? I've had the person on the other end of the phone ask me to turn down my music.

Or just flip the silent switch on the side of the phone while you are on a call.

But it still vibrates. There is no way to have no alerts ONLY while you are on a call. That is something I am so surprised that Apple hasn't integrated into any update.
