Had To Restore From Factory Defualt When Downloading iOS5

so when i went to download the new software ios5 there were a bunch of error messages and eventually i got an error message when downloading the new software and I had to restore from backup. When restoring from backup what does that mean? i had to click a bunch of new options i have no clue what i was doing i just need some help. thanks
