are you sure it downloaded all the way? There is a PART file that downloads first...its like 600+ MB that it downloads. My full file is a grey box with a music note on one side and an ipod looking thing on another side.

Mine doesn't look like that, but it took like 17 min to download and it said that it was 100% complete. Is it supposed to automatically download more? My computer made a compressed zip file. So I have the compressed zip and have a copy where all of the files are extracted in case it doesn't recognize the compressed zip. It is full of DMG files. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm at a loss here.

Did it last night and working good. Accidentally used the ipsw that you open w.snowbreeze instead of the final product in iTunes. Could not get it out of recovery mode after that. Tried a few things, only thing that got it out was iReb. First time JB'n

I downloaded everything, snowbreeze installed the new firmware, put in dfu mode, did Shift Restore in itunes, loaded the new snowbreeze firmware, it tries to restore it but then i get this error message “The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600).” Now my iphone is stuck in DFU mode. what should i do?
the reason why i'm recommending redsn0w over sn0wbreeze, is that it's easier to use and you won't run into any problems. GSM iPhones should only use sn0wbreeze because they need to preserve their baseband to a required version to use ultrasn0w.

Okay I'm man enough to admit when something is confusing me.
I jailbroke my iphone with greenpoison a while back, that's pretty much the extent of what I know about jailbreaking.
This is a while new step thats really confusing the hell out of me.
So I have to restore back to stock apple before I jailbreak right? but I have to save with tinyumbrella first? does that save all the apps I've downloaded from Cydia? I remember there was something that saves my apps I just don't know if that's it.
So to sum it up, help please. Thank you.

Okay so then I just go ahead and jailbreak again? I thought I had to restore the factory settings?

Can someone please guide me in the right direction? I haven't jailbroken since I was on a GSM iPhone a very long time ago. And I did it with greenpois0n since it was one click. After I'm done finding the ipsw and putting the phone in dfu mode, I have absolutely no idea what to do on iTunes. I don't understand the shift-restore thing.

Once you've built the ipsw with Sn0wbreeze, you're going to tell iTunes to use it to as the new ipsw for your phone. You do that by holding down Shift while clicking Restore in the iTunes window. (Hence, "Shift-Restore.") Here's a run-through of the process (you can skip ahead to step 7 if you already built the ipsw); just point iTunes at the file you built. This tutorial is from 4.3.2 but the steps would be the same, just use the firmware you want.
(edit: I'm assuming you're using Sn0wbreeze...if you're using a Mac, try these instructions.)
Mac user? no problem. Simply use Redsn0w (instructions here) to jailbreak your Verizon iPhone 4 tethered on iOS 4.2.7 (by pointing it to iOS 4.2.6), and then add Cydia.pushfix.info to install “Verizon Untether for 4.2.7” package to get full untethered jailbreak!

I've tried to use redsn0w 0.9.6rcl4. I've restored to my phone to 4.2.7 from the file I downloaded and when I run redsn0w and point it to the file it says it does not recognize it. I thought I could JB to 4.2.7 or am I just totally new and doing it wrong?
