Where do I enter the passcode?

I'm getting a message while trying to restore an iphone 4 that says "itunes can't connect to the iPhone because it is locked with a passcode. I have the passcode but where do I enter it?

Turn the iPhone on and enter the passcode. You'll have an easier time if you turn off the passcode lock before starting your project.

That's weird. My phone is password enabled and I've been able to restore my phone without it
asking for my passcode as it's locked.

Follow these simple steps to set-up Passcode Lock:
Go into Settings
Open General
Scroll down until you see Passcode Lock
Select Passcode Lock
Now, select Turn Passcode On
Enter a 4 digit Passcode
Confirm it
Set Require Passcode to Immediately
