3G or 3GS

I just purchased a used iphone im not sure if its a 3g or a 3gs, I looked in the about tab in general settings but it diddnt tell me

is there a way to tell on the phone itself ?

simple way to tell: compass | video recorder = 3GS

Yup...if your camera has a tab to switch between camera and video, you have a 3GS. The compass also tells you this.

You can also look on the back of the iPhone and the model number should be...

3G - A1241

3GS - A1303

...this info is the small text on the back shell of the phone.

Why would you purchase something and not be sure what it is?

Yeah but he should of contacted the seller on ebay if he wasn't sure.

If I recall I was the one asking the question, I would prefer not to be answered with a stupid question.

I am new to iphones I have a 4 and this is my back up phone im not familiar with the 3s

Another simple way other than checking the video recorder is to hit settings and go to the bottom...if it has "Nike + iPod" it's a 3GS if not then 3G. Also, you can go to "maps" and hit the find location button and then hit it once more to see if it has the compass feature to see which way you are facing.

I'm pretty sure that "iPhone" on the back of the 3GS is shiny, but not on the 3G?
