Downgrade 3G from 4.2.1 to 3.1.3

I am asking on behalf of my brother who owns a iPhone 3G. He was quite happy running it on 3.1.3 but got fed up of the constant offer of a new update to 4.2.1 every time he connected to iTunes, that he caved in and "updated". I did advise him against it.

Sadly, he regretted it straight away. The 3G runs like a dog. He has rebooted several times etc. but no speed up noticed.

His iPhone is not and never has been, Jailbroken. Is it possible to "downgrade" back to v3.1.3?

Note it is a 3G and not a 3GS.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I thought as much. I hope a restore will speed things up for him.

Just fyi...he'll never get the same performance as he had with 3.1.3...after iOS was put on the 3G, it basically pulled the ebrake on its performance as it simply does not have the processing ability to run it like it could OS3.

Told him such before he did it. Next time I see him I'll take a look. Disable search etc.

Not much else can be done. He's really pi@@ed off with it. He doesn't get his upgrade until October.

Wait...can't the 3G downgrade without SHSH? Definitely give it a try?Apple only started using them built-in with the 3GS, and only started using soft SHSH on the 3G with iOS 4.0, I think. Worth a try.

the iPhone 3G can be downgraded to 3.1.3 without having SHSH blobs saved (which happens when you jailbreak) also before that he should try a fresh restore onto 4.2.1 and when iTunes asks if he wants to restore from backup say NO, then sync all the stuff back! this will speed up the phone.

There is a web site that has the .ipsw files available for all iPhone OS releases. I'm not sure how to use it, or how to restore the phone, but it does exist. Unfortunately, I have not posted at least 10 posts, so the system will not allow me to post the URL. Sorry.

Thanks all for the info, I will pass it on to my brother. However, I suspect he won't want to risk turning it into a brick and he'll just put up with it until his upgrade time.
