Signal Strength Consistency iPhone4
I've heard anecdotal comments from AT&T reps about the radio build quality in iPhones. The other day I sat next to another iPhone 4 user. She had 3 bars and a good call quality while I had 1 bar and could not initiate a voice call...even after a reset. Both phones were up to date and running the most recent iOS. In general, I've had no more complaints than the typical ATT user.
Have you encountered the same inconsistency?

I have the same exact problems. The only more frustrating thing is when you are at a sports event and try to upload a photo on Facebook or send a text when you service reads full. And you can't do anything.....no data service whatsoever. Sometimes if you switch to edge you can get voice and turtle speed data.

The holds true with big red... except they are worse, you can't do anything, you can't send a text, you can't get a call out, I have no issues with ATT, yes sometimes there's data issue or call issue in groups of 50,000 or more someplace, but there's just not enough bandwidth from any carrier to support that many people on ONE tower lol
Nice thing about ATT you can switch to EDGE and make calls perfectly and send out texts/upload stuff... who cares it's 2G as long as it still works.. lol Try that on big reds 1x (2G) and it's practically dial up

Yes. I've had two exact models (AT&T) with two different signal strengths. I believe one was at -55 and mine was at -74. At those low radio strengths, there really isn't much of a difference. I did notice that they were each using a different cell tower even though I had one in each hand. Odd.
