If I get an iPhone 4 on launch day and over the summer the announce 4G, will the phone switch to the 4G via a patch or will I be stuck without 4G?

4G is not a software update.

you will have to get a new phone. I doubt it will be 4g over the summer since apple likes to wait and have a solid testing time with new technology

LTE and W-CDMA are HW. I think HSPDA is a protocol. Software?
