Contacts suddenly disappeared (3g iOS4)

I was on my iPhone 3G (updated to iOS4 on Monday evening) tonight and all of the sudden the phone turned off and then back on at exactly 12:00 midnight.
All seemed okay and i opened up the app i was in before the iphone shut down.

About half hour later i went into my text messages and realized no contact names were appearing, just phone numbers. I went to My Contacts and EVERY contact is missing!

I do not use MobileMe and i do not sync contacts with yahoo, windows, or google. The iPhone was plugged into the wall, not the the computer.

Has this happened to anyone??

im attempting to restore to factory settings and then restore from backup - i see three options in that menu, i assume the last backup listed is most recent?? here goes nothin...

okay it worked - contacts are back!
