Lost contacts after upgrading to IOS 4

Hey,
Ive just upgraded to 4.0 and Ive lost all my contacts.
I had them synced with gmail contacts.
How can I forced them to sync again?

What I did was open my Contacts and wait - you should see the spinning wheel indicating sync. It's taking a long time right now, because you and I aren't the only ones having this issue. You may need to occasionally exit the Contacts when you see the spinning stop and re-enter to initiate another round of syncing.

Yeah it took mine a while, but they are there now!

I had everything after update then after opening contacts once all my mail, contacts, calendar etc its all gone.

Apple tech support claimed that it was an issue with itunes 9.2 and XP. They said to go to older itunes and contacts would return. But uninstalling and reinstalling itunes seems risky. All i want to do is go to an earlier backup but dont know how.
