How are contacts physically stored on the iPhone?

After Jailbreaking and SSHing into my iPhone to change my SMS tones, I got to wondering how Contacts are stored and whether or not I could manually back them up.

Does anyone have any idea? Thoughts appreciated!

You can only do it via syncing.. I would advise against physically moving the files, if you can find them. I have no idea where they would be.
